Charles William Miller (born November 24, 1874 – died June 30, 1953) was a Brazilian sportsman. Many people consider him the "father of football" in Brazil. He helped start the São Paulo Athletic Club (SPAC). This is one of Brazil's oldest sports clubs. He also created the Liga Paulista de Foot-Ball. This was Brazil's very first football league. Today, it is known as the Campeonato Paulista. Miller is also seen as important for rugby union in Brazil.

Early Life and Learning Football

Charles William Miller was born in São Paulo, Brazil. His father, John Miller, was a Scottish railway engineer. His mother, Carlota Fox, was Brazilian with English family.

In 1884, when he was ten, Charles went to a school in Southampton, England. There, he learned to play both football and cricket. He even played with and against famous teams like the Corinthians and St. Mary's (which is now Southampton F.C.).

When Charles Miller came back to Brazil in 1894, he brought two footballs with him. He also brought the official rules from England. He was key in starting the football team for the São Paulo Athletic Club (SPAC). He also helped create the Liga Paulista. This was Brazil's first ever football league.

Miller played as a striker for SPAC. His team won the first three championships. They won in 1902, 1903, and 1904. Later, in 1906, he played as a goalkeeper. After a big loss, SPAC left the league for a short time. They came back in 1907 and even won again in 1911.

Charles Miller also suggested the name for a famous team. He gave the idea to the first president of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista.
