Charleston (Coos: Milukwich) is a small, friendly community located in Coos County, Oregon, in the United States. It's not a city with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's part of the larger county. Charleston is known for its busy commercial fishing fleet. It is right next to the ocean entrance of Coos Bay. Charleston is also home to the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology and a United States Coast Guard station.

About Charleston, Oregon

Charleston got its name from Charles Haskell. He was a settler who claimed land here in 1853. This land was along a waterway called South Slough. South Slough is an arm of Coos Bay. It flows into Coos Bay near where the bay meets the Pacific Ocean.
