History of Delaware Township

Delaware Township was officially created in 1858. This means it became an organized area with its own local government.

  • Forestville is a small village located within the township. It sits right on the shore of Lake Huron. The M-25 highway runs through it. Forestville has its own ZIP code, 48434, which provides mail service to a small part of the township near the village.
  • Charleston was another old settlement in the township. It was first settled around 1864 and was originally called "Cato." A post office opened there in December 1872. Sadly, in September 1881, a huge fire known as the Thumb Fire destroyed all 21 buildings in Charleston. The community was rebuilt after the fire. Today, Charleston is mostly just a crossroads, not a large settlement.

The township also receives mail service from nearby communities:

  • The city of Harbor Beach is to the north. Its ZIP code, 48441, serves a small area in the northern part of Delaware Township.
  • Minden City is to the west. Its ZIP code, 48456, serves most of the northern part of the township.
  • Palms is a community to the west. Its ZIP code, 48465, serves most of the southern part of the township.
