Minden Township is home to a few different communities. Each has its own unique features and history.
Minden City
Minden City is a small village found in the northeast part of the township. Its exact location is 43°40′16″N 82°46′27″W / 43.67111°N 82.77417°W. If you live in or near Minden City, your mail will likely use the ZIP code 48456. This ZIP code covers the northeast area of Minden Township.
Palms
Palms is an unincorporated community in the southeast part of Minden Township. You can find it at 43°36′49″N 82°46′06″W / 43.61361°N 82.76833°W. This community started around 1859. It became a stop on the Port Huron and Northwestern Railway in 1880, which was important for travel and trade.
A post office opened here in October 1882, first called Palm State. It was later renamed Palms in April 1896. The Palms ZIP code 48465 serves a wide area. This includes the southeast part of Minden Township and parts of nearby townships like Wheatland, Delaware, Marion, and Forester. A former baseball player, Leon Messing, grew up in the Palms area.
Ubly's Connection
While Ubly is a separate village, its ZIP code 48475 also serves the western part of Minden Township. This means some residents in western Minden Township get their mail through Ubly's postal services.
Geography and Rivers
Minden Township covers an area of about 36.1 square miles (93.6 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land, with very little water. Interestingly, two important rivers begin their journey within the township.
- The Black River starts near Minden City at 43°41′00″N 82°48′55″W / 43.68333°N 82.81528°W. This river eventually flows into the St. Clair River.
- The North Branch Cass River also begins nearby, at 43°41′14″N 82°49′22″W / 43.68722°N 82.82278°W. This branch is a part of the larger Saginaw River system.
Population and People
According to the census from 2000, there were 633 people living in Minden Township. These people made up 237 households, with 167 of them being families. The township had about 17.5 people per square mile.
About 32.9% of the households had children under 18 living with them. Many households (54.0%) were married couples living together. The average household had about 2.59 people, and the average family had about 3.10 people.
The population in 2000 was spread out by age. About 28.3% of residents were under 18 years old. The median age, which is the middle age of all residents, was 35 years old.
