Charleston Lake is a beautiful lake in southeastern Ontario, Canada. It is located just northeast of Gananoque. This lake is a special part of the Canadian Shield, an ancient rocky area. It is also the main source of water for the Gananoque River. Charleston Lake is a great spot for fishing!

You can find Charleston Lake Provincial Park right on its shores. The park offers lots of fun activities. You can go camping, hiking, boating, and fishing. They also have special learning programs about nature.

About Charleston Lake

Charleston Lake is quite large. It has over 100 miles of shoreline. There are also more than 100 islands in the lake. Many people have homes there, with over 800 summer and year-round residences.

The surface of the water covers about 26.2 square kilometers. That's a lot of water! The lake is also very deep. Its deepest point is 91.1 meters (about 300 feet).

Unique Geology

The lake was formed in a special area called the Frontenac Arch. This is a narrow part of the Canadian Shield. The Canadian Shield is a huge area of very old rock that covers much of northern Ontario. This ancient rock gives the lake its unique shape and many islands.

Fun Features and Places

One cool natural feature is a rock and tree formation. It looks like a profile of a face. People call it "Indian Head." It is like a natural guardian of the lake.

Besides Charleston Lake Provincial Park, there are other great places to visit. The County Park and Sand Bay are perfect for day trips. You can enjoy the outdoors and have a fun time there.

Wildlife and Conservation

Charleston Lake has been important for wildlife. For five years, ending in 2005, a special project took place here. It was to bring back the peregrine falcon. These amazing birds were reintroduced to the area.

This project was a team effort. The Canadian Peregrine Foundation, Ontario Power Generation, and Leeds County Stewardship Council all worked together. It helped these beautiful falcons return to their natural habitat.
