Early Life and High School Basketball
Charlie Brown Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in the Northeast part of the city. He first went to Imhotep Institute Charter High School. Later, he moved to George Washington High School before his junior year.
Before his senior year, he played for a team called Philly Pride. As a senior, he was a star player, scoring 18.4 points per game. He was even named the MVP of his division in the Philadelphia Public League. Charlie first planned to go to West Chester University. But then, he got a scholarship offer from Saint Joseph's University, which he accepted.
To get ready for college basketball, Charlie spent an extra year at the St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, Connecticut. There, he helped his team win 31 games and reach the National Prep Championship game.
College Basketball Career
When Charlie started at Saint Joseph's, he quickly became an important player. As a freshman, he started almost every game. He averaged 12.8 points and five rebounds per game. He was also good at shooting from long distance and the free-throw line. Because of his great first year, he was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie team.
Before his second year, he broke his wrist during practice. This injury meant he couldn't play at all that season. He had to take a medical redshirt year, which means he paused his college sports eligibility.
When he returned as a redshirt sophomore, Charlie was even better. He led the Atlantic 10 conference by scoring 19.0 points per game. He also grabbed 6.2 rebounds per game. For his amazing performance, he was named to the Second-team All-Atlantic 10. In total, Charlie scored over 1,000 points in his college career. After this season, he decided to enter the 2019 NBA draft to become a professional player. This meant he would not play his last two years of college basketball.
Professional Basketball Journey
Starting with the Atlanta Hawks (2019–2020)
Even though Charlie wasn't chosen in the NBA draft, he still got a chance to play professionally. On June 21, 2019, he signed a two-way contract with the Atlanta Hawks. This type of contract lets a player split time between an NBA team and its G League team. Charlie made his NBA debut on November 6, 2019, playing against the Chicago Bulls.
Time with the Iowa Wolves (2021)
After his time with the Hawks, Charlie joined the Iowa Wolves in the NBA G League in January 2021. He played well there, averaging 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 13 games. He also led his team in steals.
Playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder (2021)
In April 2021, Charlie signed a 10-day contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played well enough to earn a second 10-day contract. Soon after, he signed a multi-year contract with the Thunder. However, he was later waived by the team in September 2021.
With the Delaware Blue Coats (2021–2023)
Charlie's rights were traded to the Delaware Blue Coats in October 2021. He quickly joined the team and played 11 games, showing strong skills with 16.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He also had many steals and blocks.
Short Stints in the NBA (2021–2022)
While with the Blue Coats, Charlie also had brief opportunities to play in the NBA again. He signed a 10-day contract with the Dallas Mavericks in December 2021. Then, in January 2022, he signed a 10-day contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. He later signed a two-way contract with the 76ers and even made his first NBA start for them.
Return to the Blue Coats and a Championship (2022–2023)
Charlie returned to the Delaware Blue Coats in November 2022. He played a key role in helping the team win the NBA G League championship in 2023! This was a big achievement for him and the team.
New York Knicks and Raptors 905 (2023–Present)
In July 2023, Charlie joined the New York Knicks for the NBA Summer League. He signed a contract with them in September. Later, he was part of a trade involving the Charlotte Hornets and Minnesota Timberwolves. After being waived by the Hornets, Charlie joined Raptors 905 in October 2024.
On November 19, 2024, Charlie made history with Raptors 905. He recorded 9 steals in a single game, tying the G-League record for most steals. This amazing performance showed his defensive skills.
Personal Life
Charlie Brown Jr.'s father, Charlie Brown Sr., also played college basketball. He played for North Carolina A&T and then played professionally overseas. His father's career ended due to an injury.
Charlie welcomed a son in 2023 with his girlfriend.
