Charm La'Donna's Early Life and Dance Journey
Charmaine Jordan, or Charm La'Donna, was born in Compton, California, on May 15, 1988. She grew up with her older brother, Yki, and her mom, Debbie. Charm often says that her mom, grandma, and all the strong women in Compton helped her become who she is today.
When she was just 3 years old, Charm told her mom she wanted to dance! Her mom signed her up for dance classes at a local center in Compton. From there, she trained at Regina's School of the Arts and then Miss Monica's Dance School.
When Charm was 10, she met the famous dancer and choreographer Fatima Robinson. This happened during an audition for a music video. Fatima quickly saw Charm's amazing talent and became her mentor. Charm went to the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACSHA), where she graduated in 2006. She also earned a degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), studying world arts and culture.
Charm La'Donna's Amazing Career in Dance and Music
During her last year of high school, Charm La'Donna got a huge opportunity! She was hired by the pop superstar Madonna to be a backup dancer for her "Confessions Tour." After the tour, Charm worked as Fatima Robinson's assistant choreographer. She helped create dances for many music videos and TV shows, even some Super Bowl halftime shows, all while studying full-time at UCLA.
Working with Fatima Robinson led Charm to meet another talented person from Compton, the rapper Kendrick Lamar. She helped choreograph his performance at the 2015 BET Awards. Later, she choreographed and danced in his opening performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards in 2018.
Charm La'Donna became even more well-known for choreographing music videos and live shows for singers like Rosalía, Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, and Meghan Trainor. Her incredible work on the music video for "Con altura" (by Rosalía, J Balvin, and El Guincho) won her an MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography. She also directed the music video for Rema and Selena Gomez's "Calm Down (Remix)," which earned her another MTV Video Music Award! Charm was also the only choreographer for the Weeknd's amazing Super Bowl LV halftime show.
In 2020, Charm La'Donna started pursuing her own music dreams again. She signed a record deal with Epic Records and released her first two songs, "So & So" and "Westside." Her first collection of songs, called an extended play (EP), titled La'Donna, came out on April 9, 2021.
