Charmoille is a lovely village located in the beautiful Jura region of Switzerland. It used to be its own separate municipality, which is like a small town with its own local government. However, on January 1, 2009, Charmoille joined with other nearby villages to form a new, larger municipality called La Baroche. This means Charmoille is now part of a bigger community, but it still keeps its unique village feel.

Discovering Charmoille

Charmoille is a quiet and charming place. It is known for its peaceful surroundings and traditional Swiss village atmosphere. The village is a great example of how communities in Switzerland can change over time.

Where is Charmoille Located?

Charmoille is nestled in the Jura canton of Switzerland. This canton is in the northwestern part of the country. It is part of the Porrentruy district. The Jura region is famous for its rolling hills, forests, and traditional farms.

The village sits at an elevation of about 515 meters (1,690 feet) above sea level. This gives it a nice view of the surrounding countryside. Its location makes it a peaceful spot away from busy city life.

Becoming Part of La Baroche

For many years, Charmoille was an independent municipality. This meant it had its own local council and made its own decisions. However, in 2009, Charmoille merged with several other villages. These villages were Fregiécourt, Miécourt, Pleujouse, and Vendlincourt.

They all came together to create a new, larger municipality called La Baroche. This merger helped the villages work together more efficiently. It also allowed them to share resources and services. Even though it's part of a bigger group, Charmoille still keeps its name and identity as a village within La Baroche.

What is a Municipality?

In Switzerland, a municipality is the smallest unit of local government. Think of it like a small town or a group of villages that manage their own local affairs. They are responsible for things like schools, roads, and local services.

When municipalities merge, it often happens to make local government more effective. It can also help small villages have a stronger voice in the region. Charmoille's merger into La Baroche is a good example of this process.
