The History of Charra
How Charra Got Its Name
The name Charra was first used in 1864. It was given to a large area of land used for farming animals. This land was called the "Charra Run." It was managed by two people, Mr. R.B. Smith and Mr. W.R. Swan.
From Town to Locality
A government town named Charra was officially created on September 19, 1889. However, it didn't last forever. On May 16, 1929, the town was officially closed down. Later, the name Charra was used for a railway station. This station was part of the Eyre Peninsula Railway line. Today, the railway station is located within the current area of Charra.
The name "Charra" was given to the present-day locality in January 1999. This new area includes where the old government town used to be.
Schools in Charra's Past
Over the years, three schools were connected to the name Charra. The first school operated from 1897 to 1902. Another school, called Charra Plains School, was open from 1933 to 1940. The third school was the Charra Woolshed School. It taught students from 1904 until 1931. After that, it was renamed "Uworra School" and stayed open until 1944.
