Early Racing Days
Chaz Mostert grew up in Browns Plains, near Brisbane. He started kart racing when he was just seven years old. He raced karts in Ipswich and on the Gold Coast.
In 2008, Chaz moved up to racing in Formula Ford cars. He finished 11th in the 2008 championship. Then he came in fourth place in 2009. In 2010, he won the 2010 Australian Formula Ford Championship. He even set a new record for the most race wins in one season!
Touring Car Adventures
Starting in the Development Series
In 2010, Chaz got a chance to drive a Ford BF Falcon at the famous Bathurst track. This was part of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series, which is like a training ground for Supercars. He did very well, finishing 6th and 4th in his two races. This led to a deal with Miles Racing for the 2011 season.
Chaz continued to race strongly, especially in wet weather. Later in 2011, a big team called Ford Performance Racing signed him. He even got a pole position (starting first) in his very first race with them! He finished on the podium (top three) three times in his first two events. Because of his great driving, Chaz won the Mike Kable Young Gun Award in 2011. This award goes to promising young drivers.
In 2012, Chaz kept racing with Ford Performance Racing. He started the season perfectly by getting pole position and winning both races at the Adelaide 500. He won another round that year too. He finished third in the championship. This was a very strong year for the series, with many future stars racing.
In 2013, Chaz won the Adelaide 500 round again. But before the next race, he was called up to race in the main V8 Supercars championship! So, he didn't race in the Development Series anymore.
Racing in the Supercars Championship
Dick Johnson Racing
Chaz made his big V8 Supercars debut at the Perth 360 race in 2013. He joined the Dick Johnson Racing team. On July 28, 2013, in only his fifth race, Chaz won his very first Supercars race! This happened at the Ipswich 360 at Queensland Raceway. He also got another podium finish later that year. He ended the 2013 championship in 17th place, even though he missed some early races.
Ford Performance Racing
In 2014, Chaz joined Ford Performance Racing. He won his second Supercars race at Barbagallo, exactly one year after his debut. In October 2014, Chaz won the famous 2014 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 race! He was teamed with Paul Morris. They started at the very back of the grid, which was the lowest starting position ever for a Bathurst winner! Chaz passed Jamie Whincup on the very last lap to win. He finished the 2014 championship in seventh place.
Prodrive Racing Australia
In 2015, Ford Performance Racing changed its name to Prodrive Racing Australia. They also introduced a new car, the Ford FG X Falcon. Chaz and his teammate Mark Winterbottom were the top drivers that year. Chaz won races at Winton, Hidden Valley, Queensland Raceway, and two races at Sydney Motorsport Park.
However, during qualifying for the 2015 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, Chaz had a very bad crash. He broke his leg and wrist, which meant he couldn't race for the rest of the season. His wrecked car is now at the National Motor Racing Museum.
Rod Nash Racing
In 2016 and 2017, Chaz raced for Rod Nash Racing, which was a partner team of Prodrive. In his first race back after his crash, Chaz got pole position at the Adelaide 500. He said this was almost as exciting as winning Bathurst! Even though he got four more pole positions in 2016, he didn't win any races. He finished seventh in the championship.
In 2017, Chaz finally won again, taking three victories. He won at Phillip Island, Queensland Raceway, and the Gold Coast. His win at the Gold Coast, with co-driver Steve Owen, helped them win the first-ever Enduro Cup for their team and for Ford.
Tickford Racing
In 2018, the team changed its name again to Tickford Racing. It was a tough year for the team, but Chaz still managed to win one race, again at the Gold Coast 600.
In 2019, Tickford Racing started using the new Ford Mustang GT. Chaz had a pretty good year, winning one race at Albert Park and getting several podium finishes. He couldn't race at the Gold Coast after crashing his car during a qualifying session.
Walkinshaw Andretti United
On November 26, Chaz announced he was leaving Tickford Racing after seven years. He also switched car brands, moving to Walkinshaw Andretti United and racing a Holden for the 2020 season.
On June 15, 2021, Chaz signed a new long-term contract with Walkinshaw Andretti United until the end of the 2023 season. Later that week, he won the 2021 Darwin Triple Crown.
On November 7, 2021, during a night race at Sydney SuperNight, Chaz showed amazing skill. He started in last place (26th) in heavy rain and drove all the way to finish third!
Chaz also set a new lap record at the Bathurst 1000 on December 4, 2021. He completed a lap in 2 minutes, 3.3736 seconds while driving a Walkinshaw Andretti United Holden ZB Commodore.
Production Car Racing
In 2011, Chaz raced in the Bathurst 12 Hour race. He drove an HSV VXR Turbo and finished third in his class.
In 2016, Chaz, along with Nathan Morcom, won the very first Bathurst 6 Hour race. They drove a BMW 335i E92.
GT Racing Adventures
Chaz also started racing in GT cars, which are high-performance sports cars. He raced in the GT3 class of the Bathurst 12 Hour. In 2017, he surprised everyone by qualifying second and even led the race early on.
His great driving led to him being invited to race for the factory-supported Schnitzer Motorsport team in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, he got pole position (started first) and again started the race very strongly.
Chaz has also had chances to race GT3 and LM GTE cars overseas for BMW. He won two class victories in the Asian Le Mans Series in 2017-18. He also finished fifth in the 2017 FIA GT World Cup in Macau. In GTE racing, Chaz has competed in big races like Petit Le Mans in 2018 and the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2019.
