Alessandro "Alex" Zanardi (born 23 October 1966 – died 1 May 2026) was an amazing Italian athlete. He was a talented racing driver and later became an inspiring para-cyclist. Alex competed in many top racing series like Formula One and CART.

He won two national championships in CART racing in 1997 and 1998. But his life changed forever after a serious racing accident in 2001. Despite losing both his legs, Alex showed incredible courage. He returned to racing and also became a champion para-cyclist.

Alex won four gold medals at the Summer Paralympics in 2012 and 2016. He also earned 12 world championship titles in para-cycling. His journey is a powerful example of never giving up. He inspired millions around the world with his spirit. Alex Zanardi passed away on May 1, 2026, at the age of 59.

Early Life and Racing Dreams

Alessandro Leone Zanardi was born in Bologna, Italy, on October 23, 1966. His father was a plumber, and his mother made shirts. When he was three, his family moved to Castel Maggiore. Sadly, his sister Cristina, a promising swimmer, died in a car accident in 1979.

Alex started kart racing when he was 13 years old. He even built his first kart using dustbin wheels and pipes! He quickly became very good. In 1987, he won all five rounds of the CIK-FIA European Championship. He then moved up to Italian Formula Three Championship and later to International Formula 3000. In 1991, he won his first F3000 race and finished second in the championship.

Formula One Adventures

Alex Zanardi's talent led him to Formula One, the highest level of motor racing. He raced in F1 from 1991 to 1994 and again in 1999. His best result was a sixth-place finish in the 1993 Brazilian Grand Prix.

During his time in F1, he drove for teams like Jordan and Lotus. He helped fine-tune the team's active suspension system. In 1993, he had an accident while cycling and broke bones in his foot. He still raced but later suffered a concussion in a practice crash. After a tough 1994 season, Alex left Formula One.

CART Success and a Life-Changing Accident

In 1995, Alex moved to the United States to race in the CART Series. He quickly became a fan favorite. In his first season, he won three races and earned the "Rookie of the Year" award.

A famous moment was his risky overtake at the Corkscrew corner at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in 1996. This move, known as "The Pass," was so daring it was later banned! Alex became a champion in CART, winning titles in 1997 and 1998. He won 15 races in total during his CART career.

After winning, Alex loved to spin his car in tight circles, leaving circular tire marks. This fun celebration earned him the nickname "the Donut King." This became a popular way for drivers to celebrate wins across America.

Return to Formula One

His success in CART brought him back to Formula One in 1999 with the Williams team. However, this return was challenging. He faced reliability issues and tough races. Despite some strong qualifying performances, he did not score any points. At the end of the season, Alex and Williams decided to part ways.

CART Return and a Serious Accident

Alex returned to CART racing in 2001. On September 15, 2001, during a race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz in Germany, Alex was involved in a very serious accident. After a pit stop, his car spun into the path of another car. The impact was severe.

Alex lost both his legs in the crash. He also lost a lot of blood. Quick medical help saved his life. He underwent several surgeries and began a long recovery.

"When I woke up without legs, I looked at the half that was left, not the half that was lost."

This quote shows Alex's incredible positive attitude. He focused on what he still had, not what he lost.

A New Chapter: Para-Cycling and More Racing

After his accident, Alex was fitted with prosthetic legs. He started rehabilitating and even designed his own custom legs. He was determined to return to sports.

In 2003, Alex drove a race car again. He completed the 13 laps he couldn't finish at the Lausitzring in 2001. His lap time was so fast, it would have placed him fifth in the actual race! This showed his amazing skill and determination.

He returned to full-time racing in 2004 in the European Touring Car Championship. In 2005, he won his first world series race, celebrating with his famous "donuts." He won more races in 2006, 2008, and 2009. Alex also tested a Formula One car again in 2006, specially adapted with hand controls. He also competed in DTM and the 2019 24 Hours of Daytona.

Paralympic Gold Medals

Alex also took up handcycling with a goal to compete in the Paralympic Games. He quickly started winning international medals.

Alex became a true inspiration, showing that anything is possible with determination.

Another Challenge: The 2020 Accident

On June 19, 2020, Alex was involved in another serious accident. He was competing in a handcycling race in Italy when he lost control and collided with a truck. He suffered very serious head injuries.

Alex received intensive medical care and underwent several surgeries. He was in a critical condition for a long time. Slowly, he began to recover. By December 2020, he regained his sight and hearing. In January 2021, he was able to speak again. After 18 months, he returned home to continue his rehabilitation.

In July 2022, Alex was hospitalized again after a fire at his home damaged his medical equipment. He returned home after 76 days.
