As a child, she loved to sing. Her father noticed her talent when she sang in his karaoke lounge. Che'Nelle then started writing and making her own music. She even set up a small studio at home. She shared some of her music on a website called Myspace. A person named Sir Charles Dixon discovered her songs there. He showed her music to Virgin Records.
In late 2005, Virgin Records flew Che'Nelle to New York City. She met with people from the record label. The head of the label, Jason Flom, signed her right away. Within two days, she had a deal to become a world-class artist. Before moving to New York, Che'Nelle worked as a promotions assistant. She signed a deal for six albums with Virgin Records America.
