Early Life and Discovery
Where Che'Nelle Grew Up
Cheryline Ernestine Lim was born on March 10, 1983, in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Her father is Malaysian Chinese, and her mother has both Indian and Dutch family roots. When Che'Nelle was 10 years old, her family moved to Perth, Australia.
How She Started Singing
As a child, Che'Nelle loved to sing in her father's karaoke lounge. Her father noticed her talent and encouraged her. She later started writing and making her own music in a small studio at home.
Getting a Record Deal
Che'Nelle uploaded some of her music to Myspace, a popular social media site at the time. A music producer named Sir Charles Dixon discovered her songs there. He shared her music with Virgin Records. In late 2005, Virgin Records flew Che'Nelle to New York City to meet with their team. The head of the label, Jason Flom, was very impressed and signed her right away. Within just two days, she had a deal to make six albums! Before moving to New York, Che'Nelle worked as a promotions assistant. In Australia, her music is handled by EMI.
Music Career Highlights
Starting Out: 2006–2008
In March 2006, Che'Nelle had a big opportunity. She performed as the opening act for the famous American rapper Kanye West during his tour in Australia.
Her first album, Things Happen for a Reason, was released on September 25, 2007, in Japan. It came out in Australia on October 29, 2007. The first song from this album was "I Fell in Love with the DJ", which featured reggae artist Cham. This song was also made in Bahasa Malaysia, a language spoken in Malaysia, and called "DJ yang Ku Puja".
Che'Nelle also showed her talent as a songwriter. She helped write songs for other artists, including "Fierce" for Carmit Bachar (who was in the Pussycat Dolls). She also co-wrote "Hell No!" for Australian singer Ricki-Lee Coulter and "Can't Breathe" for English singer Leona Lewis.
New Albums and Collaborations: 2009–Present
Che'Nelle's second album was named Feel Good, after its first single. The song "Feel Good" was heavily influenced by reggae and dancehall music, similar to her first hit "I Fell in Love with the DJ". The music video for "Feel Good" was released online on January 11, 2010. The album Feel Good came out in Japan on February 10, 2010, through EMI Japan. Another popular song from this album was "Missing".
Her third album, called Luv Songs, was a special cover album. This means it featured Che'Nelle singing her own versions of songs by other artists. It was released only in Japan on July 20, 2011. On this album, she covered songs by American R&B singers like Ne-Yo, Minnie Ripperton, and Whitney Houston. She also included some songs in Japanese.
In 2015, Che'Nelle was invited to perform live at Fantasy on Ice, a touring ice show. She sang with figure skater and two-time Olympic champion, Yuzuru Hanyu, performing songs like "Believe".
In 2017, Che'Nelle finished her contract with Universal Music Japan's sublabel, Virgin Music. Then, in 2023, she announced that she had signed with Avex Trax, another record label. Her first song with Avex Trax, called "I Am", was released in December of that year.
