The Chehalis River is a river in the southwest part of British Columbia, Canada. It is located near the city of Chilliwack. The river starts in the Douglas Ranges of the Coast Mountains. It flows southeast and eventually joins the Harrison River.

What is the Chehalis River Like?

The Chehalis River valley has been used for logging. This means trees were cut down there. Even so, the river itself flows through a small canyon. After the canyon, it has a flatter part before meeting the Harrison River.

The Chehalis River is a great place for fishing. It also has exciting whitewater kayaking spots. Some parts, like those near Statlu Creek, are known for class III and IV rapids. These are challenging and fun for experienced kayakers.

Where Does the Chehalis River Start?

The Chehalis River begins in the mountains above Statlu Lake. It flows into Statlu Lake and then out again. Soon after leaving the lake, the river drops over the impressive Statlu Falls. These falls are beautiful but can be dangerous to view up close.

After the falls, the river turns south. It then flows into Chehalis Lake. Once it leaves Chehalis Lake, it continues its journey south. Finally, it reaches the Harrison River.

Activities Around the Chehalis River

The canyon of the Chehalis River is very popular. The tall peaks and cliffs around its basin attract many people. This area is a favorite spot for rock climbing and hiking. People often call this whole region "the Chehalis."

There is also a small ski resort nearby. It is called Hemlock Valley. This resort is on the eastern side of the Chehalis River basin.

Roads and Connections

A road goes into the northeast part of the mountains. This road leads to the Harrison Lake basin. It continues to historic Port Douglas, which is at the top of Harrison Lake. From there, it goes up the Lillooet River past Skookumchuck Hot Springs to Pemberton and Mount Currie.

This road was planned to be named the Sasquatch Highway. There were plans to pave it before the 2010 Winter Olympics. The idea was to connect Highway 7 (Lougheed Highway) at Chehalis with Highway 99 (the Sea-to-Sky Highway) at Mount Currie.
