Chelsea Market is a super cool place in New York City. It's a mix of a food hall, a shopping spot, and even an office building. You can find it in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. The market takes up a whole city block!
It even has a bridge that connects it to another building across Tenth Avenue. A famous park called the High Line also goes right through the building on the Tenth Avenue side.
Chelsea Market was built way back in the 1890s. It used to be the huge factory for the National Biscuit Company. Guess what? The famous Oreo cookie was invented and made right here!
In the 1990s, the old factory was turned into what you see today. It has shops and restaurants on the ground floor. Offices are located on the floors above. Today, Chelsea Market is owned by Alphabet Inc., which is the company that owns Google.

Discover Chelsea Market: What's Inside?
Chelsea Market fills an entire city block. It's located between Ninth and Tenth Avenues. It also stretches from 15th to 16th Streets. There's a cool bridge over Tenth Avenue connecting it to another building.
Besides all the fun shops, Chelsea Market also has office spaces. Many media and TV companies have offices here. For example, Food Network and MLB.com are tenants. Even Google and its company YouTube have offices on several floors.
Shops and Restaurants to Explore
The market opened its retail area in April 1997. It has a main walkway on the ground floor. You can enter from either 9th or 10th Avenues.
There are many popular stores and places to eat. Some well-known spots include Pearl River Mart and the Chelsea Market Baskets. You can also find Posman Books and Sarabeth's Bakery. For fresh food, check out Manhattan Fruit Exchange and BuonItalia.
Other tasty places include Miznon, Fat Witch Bakery, and Amy's Bread. There's also The Lobster Place for seafood. You can find many smaller shops selling cheese, olive oil, chocolate, and flowers. Davidovich Bakery also has a Davidovich Bagels spot here.
In 2006, a restaurant called Morimoto opened. It was created by "Iron Chef" Masaharu Morimoto. The Food Network used to film shows like Iron Chef America here.
A Community of Businesses
The people who developed Chelsea Market wanted businesses to work together. For example, vendors sell fresh ingredients to the restaurants. This helps everyone succeed.
Having TV companies in the building also brings attention to the market. It helps people learn about the shops and restaurants. Businesses can even make and sell their products all in one place.
The High Line: A Park Above the City
The High Line is a special park that opened in 2009. It's built on an old, elevated train track. This park goes right through the Chelsea Market building on the Tenth Avenue side.
The High Line is like a long, green pathway. It connects different parts of the city. You can walk along it from the Javits Center to the Meatpacking District.
History of Chelsea Market
Building the factory started in the 1890s. Several companies joined together in 1898 to form the National Biscuit Company, or Nabisco. Nabisco kept adding to the factory until 1958. That's when the company moved its operations away.
The factory ended up with 19 separate buildings. These included areas for making products and offices. After Nabisco left, the buildings were used for different things. The area around them also changed.
In the 1990s, the complex was redeveloped. It became the Chelsea Market we know today. The new owners kept many of the old parts of the buildings. They also added fun, creative touches.
Most of the original buildings are made of wood and brick. There are also indoor bridges on some upper floors. These bridges let people cross from one side of the courtyard to the other.
The building on the Tenth Avenue side was built later, in the 1930s. It replaced older factory parts. This new building was built at the same time as the High Line. This allowed freight trains to go directly into the building! Train tracks and walking bridges also connected it to another building across 10th Avenue.
Chelsea Market is part of the "Gansevoort Market Historic District." This means it's a special historical area. It's recognized by New York State and the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2018, Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc., bought Chelsea Market. They paid over $2.4 billion for it! Google already leased space in the building before buying it. This sale was one of the most expensive for a single building in New York City's history.
