Chelyan (/ˈʃiːljən/ SHEEL-yən) is a small community in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area defined by the government just for counting people. Chelyan is located on the south side of the Kanawha River. It is southeast of a town called Chesapeake. You can easily reach Chelyan by taking Exit 85 from the West Virginia Turnpike. In 2010, about 776 people lived there.
Where Chelyan Got Its Name
The community of Chelyan was named after a young girl. Her name was Chelyan Calvert. Her parent was an early postmaster in the area. A postmaster is someone who manages a post office.

A very famous person was born in Chelyan. His name is Jerry West. He was a fantastic basketball player. He played in the NBA, which is the top basketball league. After playing, he also became a coach and a general manager for NBA teams.
