Chen Zhu (born August 17, 1953) is a Chinese scientist and important public figure. He is a hematologist, which means he studies blood and blood diseases. He is also a molecular biologist, studying living things at a very tiny, molecular level.
Chen Zhu was the president of the Red Cross Society of China from 2015 until October 2024. He also held many other important roles. He was a vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, which is a big part of China's government, from 2013 to 2023. He led the Chinese Peasants' and Workers' Democratic Party from 2012 to 2022.
From 2007 to 2013, Chen Zhu was the Minister of Health for China. This means he was in charge of the country's health system. He was also the president of the Chinese Medical Association from 2010 to 2015.
In the world of science, he is a respected member of several top academies. These include the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society in the UK, and the United States National Academy of Sciences. He also teaches at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

Chen Zhu was born in Shanghai, China, in August 1953. His family's original hometown is Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province.
Early Career and Education
Chen Zhu started his medical journey in rural China. For five years, he worked as a "barefoot doctor." These doctors provided basic healthcare in villages.
He then went to university and earned his master's degree in September 1981 from Shanghai Second Medical Sciences University. This school is now part of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Later, he studied in Paris, France, at the Paris Diderot University. There, he earned his Ph.D. He also completed his medical training and research at the same university and its teaching hospital.
Chen Zhu was once the head of the Shanghai Institute of Hematology. He also led the China Human Genome Center (South) in Shanghai.
Awards and Achievements
Chen Zhu has received many honors for his work in science and medicine. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is also an international member of the United States National Academy of Sciences and the French Academy of Sciences. He is a member of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities. In 2008, he became an Honorary Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences.
He received a top science award from the Chinese government. He also won the "Prix de l'Qise" from a French cancer organization, being the first non-French person to receive it.
In 2002, the French government gave him the Legion of Honour, a very high award. The University of Hong Kong gave him an honorary doctor of science degree in 2005. In 2010, he received another honorary degree from the University of York in England.
In 2012, Chen Zhu was given the Szent-Györgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research. This award recognized his important work in cancer research. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2013.
In 2018, he received the Sjöberg Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. This award was for his discoveries about how a type of leukemia (a blood cancer) works and for developing a new treatment for it. He shared this prize with two other cancer researchers, Anne Dejean and Hugues de Thé.
Family Life
Chen Zhu comes from a family of doctors. His father, Chen Jialun, and his mother, Xu Manyin, were both well-known doctors and medical professors in Shanghai.
He is the oldest of three children. His younger brother, Chen Zhen, was a famous artist who lived in France. Chen Zhu also has a sister named Chen Jian.
Chen Zhu's wife, Chen Saijuan, is also a very respected hematologist and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. They have a son together. Both Chen Zhu and his wife learned from a famous doctor named Wang Zhenyi.
