Chenopodium atrovirens, also called pinyon goosefoot or dark goosefoot, is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the amaranth family, which includes many different kinds of plants.

This plant grows naturally in western North America. You can find it in southern Western Canada and most of the Western United States. It likes to grow in many places, like open, sandy spots or areas where the ground has been disturbed. It also grows in mountain regions such as the Sierra Nevada, Peninsular Ranges, and Rocky Mountains.

About the Pinyon Goosefoot Plant

This plant is an annual herb, which means it grows and dies within one year. It has a stem that stands upright and can branch out. The stem can grow up to about 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) tall. Sometimes, it stays much smaller.

The plant can be green or even a bit magenta (purplish-red). It often has a light coating that looks like pinkish powder. Its leaves are shaped like oblongs or ovals and can be up to 3.5 centimeters long. The edges of the leaves are usually smooth, but sometimes they might have a few small lobes or bumps.

Flowers and Fruit

The flowers of the pinyon goosefoot are very tiny. They grow in a round cluster. Each small flower has five small, slightly powdery parts, which are barely visible.

After the flowers, the plant produces small fruits. These fruits are oval-shaped and about a millimeter long. They loosely cover the tiny seed inside.
