History of Cherokee
Cherokee began in 1870. This was when railroads were being built through the area. The town was special because three different railroads met there. These were the Memphis, Kansas & Colorado Railroad, the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Gulf Railroad, and the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The town was named after Cherokee County. People at the time mistakenly thought the town was located in that county.
The first post office in Cherokee opened in August 1870. This helped the growing community connect with other places.
