Cherrywood (Irish: Coill na Silíní) is a new and growing area in Dublin, Ireland. It is located in the southeast of the city. Cherrywood borders other areas like Cabinteely, Loughlinstown, and Rathmichael.

Building started on this empty land in 1998. Cherrywood mostly has a business park, new homes, and shops. Development slowed down when the economy wasn't doing well. But it started again in the late 2010s. Cherrywood is still being built today.

Where is Cherrywood Located?

The modern area of Cherrywood is built on old lands. These include Cherrywood, Laughanstown, Glebe, and parts of Brenanstown. It is next to areas like Cabinteely, Loughlinstown, Rathmichael, and Carrickmines.

Cherrywood sits between two major roads. These are the M50 motorway and the N11 road. It is about one kilometre north of where these roads split off from the M11. The main road through Cherrywood is the R118 regional road. It runs from northeast to southwest. This road crosses the N11 at Wyattville Road. It also connects to the M50 at Junction 16.

South of the R118 road is the business park. This area also has many medium-sized apartment buildings. The north side of the road has parks and homes. Here you can find both apartments and houses.

Cherrywood's History

Ancient Times

People have lived in the Cherrywood area for a very long time. Evidence shows activity from at least the Stone Age. The Brennanstown Portal Tomb is a very old burial site. It is about 4,500 years old, from around 2500 BC. Another ancient tomb in Laughanstown is from the late Stone Age or early Bronze Age.

The old Tully Church ruins are in Laughanstown. This church was built between the 6th and 9th centuries. It was used until the 1600s.

In 1794, a large army camp was set up in Laughanstown. This was because people feared an invasion by Napoleon's forces. Up to 4,000 soldiers may have stayed there. Several roads were built to connect the camp to the coast. One of these was the Military Road. The camp was closed in the 1810s.

The Harcourt Street railway line was built through this area in the 1850s. Trains crossed over a large bridge called the Bride's Glen Viaduct. This bridge has five arches. It is located just south of the modern business park. The railway line closed in 1858. The viaduct is still there but is no longer used.

Building the Business Park

Cherrywood is growing around its business park. This growth is part of a careful plan. The plan is called the Cherrywood-Carrickmines Local Area Plan. It also follows the County Development Plans from 2004 and later. Cherrywood is meant to be a main local centre. This means there are rules about what can be built there. The business park covers about 400 acres. Much of it is still being built or is empty land.

The land for Cherrywood was set aside for building in 1993. At that time, it was owned by Monarch Properties. In 1998, the first office buildings were constructed. This area was first called "Cherrywood Business Park." Building was slow. After the economic problems in Ireland in 2008, development almost stopped. In 2015, some parts of Cherrywood were called a "ghost town." This was because many buildings were empty.

New Plans and Growth

In 2012, new investors took over. They wanted to make the area popular again. They were supported by AIB Bank and Danske Bank. Parts of Cherrywood were improved. A building that only had a food place was made bigger. It now includes a gym. Most of the main office buildings are owned by the same company.

A new master plan was approved by the local council. This plan included building over 1,200 apartments. It also planned for more than 500,000 square feet of business space. A hotel was also part of the plan.

New Name and More Building

In 2018, a company called Spear Street Capital bought eight office blocks. They paid €145 million. After this, the business park was renamed "The Campus Cherrywood." The money from this deal helped build more of the area around it.

In 2021, plans were announced for a new science facility. This facility would help new life-sciences companies grow. It was planned to have 18 labs and 9 offices. It would cover 30,000 square feet. This new facility was expected to create 100 jobs.
