Chester Gap is a special place in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. It's a type of mountain pass called a wind gap. This means it's a low spot or break in a mountain ridge. Sometimes, people call it Happy Creek Gap because of a creek that flows nearby.

Chester Gap is located where three counties meet: Rappahannock County, Fauquier County, and Warren County. A major road, U.S. Route 522, goes right through the gap. Also, the famous Appalachian Trail crosses here, and there's a starting point for hikers.

What is Chester Gap?

Chester Gap is a natural opening in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Think of it like a natural doorway through the mountains. It sits at about 1,339 feet (408 meters) above sea level. This gap is about 1,000 feet (305 meters) lower than the mountain tops next to it. It's also about 500 feet (152 meters) higher than the flat land around it.

Where is Chester Gap Located?

Chester Gap is in the northern part of Virginia. It's only about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) south of another, lower gap called Manassas Gap. These two gaps are separated by a peak called High Knob, which is about 2,388 feet (728 meters) tall.

The small community of Chester Gap is found right inside and just south of the gap itself. To the west of the gap, you'll find the northern edge of Shenandoah National Park. This park is a beautiful place for nature and outdoor activities. The town of Front Royal is located just north of Chester Gap.
