Chester Lovelle Talton, born on September 22, 1941, is an important leader in the Episcopal Church. He served as a special bishop, called a Provisional Bishop, for the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin.

About Chester Talton's Life
Chester Talton was born in El Dorado, Arkansas. His parents were Chester Talton and Mae Ola Shells. He became a church leader, first as a deacon in 1970. Then, in February 1971, he became a priest. This happened in the Diocese of California, which is based in San Francisco.
Family Life
Chester Talton married Karen Louise Warren on August 25, 1963. They had four children together. Sadly, Karen Talton passed away in 2003. Later, in 2007, Chester Talton married April Grayson. She was also a church leader in the Diocese of Los Angeles.
A Special Bishop
Chester Talton is African American. He is one of 37 Black bishops who have been chosen and officially recognized by the Episcopal Church.
Chester Talton's Education
Chester Talton studied at two different schools to prepare for his church work.
- He went to California State University, Hayward in California. There, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1965.
- He also attended Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. He earned his Master of Divinity degree in 1970. Later, he received his Doctor of Divinity degree from the same school.
Chester Talton's Church Roles
Chester Talton held many important positions in the church throughout his career.
- Provisional Bishop: From 2011 to 2014, he was the Provisional Bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin.
- Bishop Suffragan: From 1991 to 2010, he served as a Bishop Suffragan for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. A Bishop Suffragan helps the main bishop.
- Rector: He was the Rector (the main priest) at St. Philip's Church in New York City (in Harlem) from 1985 to 1990. Before that, he was Rector at St. Philip's Church in Saint Paul, Minnesota, from 1976 to 1981.
- Mission Officer: From 1981 to 1985, he worked as a Mission Officer at Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City.
- Vicar and Curate: He was a Vicar at Holy Cross Church in Chicago, Illinois, from 1973 to 1976. He also served as a Vicar at St. Mathias' Mission and a Curate (an assistant priest) at All Saints' Church in Carmel, California, from 1971 to 1973. His first role as a Vicar was at Good Shepherd Church in Berkeley, California, from 1970 to 1971.
Becoming a Bishop
When Chester Talton became a bishop, he was officially recognized by three other bishops. These were Edmond L. Browning, Orris George Walker, and Robert Marshall Anderson.
