The Chief White Crane Recreation Area is a fun state park in southeastern South Dakota, United States. It's about 5 miles (8 km) west of Yankton. This park sits right on the banks of the mighty Missouri River and the pretty Lake Yankton. It's also close to the Gavins Point Dam and Lewis and Clark Lake.

You can find lots of exciting things to do at Chief White Crane Recreation Area!

  • There are 145 campsites if you want to go camping.
  • You can also stay in one of the 10 cozy camper cabins.

The park is a great spot for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. You can enjoy these activities on Lake Yankton or the big Missouri River.

In winter, something really cool happens: many Bald eagles come to rest here! It's a famous place to see these amazing birds along the Missouri River.

Park History

The United States Army Corps of Engineers first built this park. That was after they built the Gavins Point Dam nearby.

In 2001, the park became part of the Lewis & Clark Recreation Area. The ownership of the park was moved to the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks. This means the state now manages the park for everyone to enjoy.

The Chief White Crane Recreation Area is also next to the Training Dike Recreation Area. This area is also along the Missouri River.
