Chikaming Township is located in the western part of Berrien County. Lake Michigan is to its northwest. Other nearby townships include Lake Township to the north, Weesaw Township to the east, Three Oaks Township to the south, and New Buffalo Township to the southwest.

A Look at Its Past

Chikaming Township was officially created in 1856. The name "Chikaming" comes from an old Algonquin language. It means "lake," which is a perfect name since the township is right next to Lake Michigan!

Towns and Villages Here

Several smaller communities are part of Chikaming Township. These include Sawyer, Harbert, and Lakeside. Part of Union Pier is also located within Chikaming Township. There's also an area called Shorewood-Tower Hills-Harbert that the U.S. Census Bureau uses for counting people.

Nature and Location

Chikaming Township covers about 57.3 square kilometers (about 22 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

A major highway, Interstate 94, runs through the township. It goes parallel to the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline.

You can find Warren Woods State Park within the township. This park is a great place to explore nature. The Galien River also flows through the township, moving from the northeast to the southwest.
