This sea is important because it has valuable minerals like phosphorite and manganese. These might be collected from the seafloor in the future.

Presencial Sea: A Zone of Influence

The Presencial Sea (sometimes called "heritage safeguard sea") is a special area of the ocean. A country like Chile marks this space to show where its interests are in the high seas. This area is next to its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Chile does not claim ownership over the Presencial Sea. Instead, it shows that it wants to protect this area. This helps stop harmful activities and keeps marine resources safe. It is especially important for fish that travel long distances.

An Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is an area of the sea where a country has special rights. These rights are for exploring and using marine resources. This includes fishing, energy production from water and wind, and other activities.

Chile's EEZ covers a huge area. It includes the waters around its mainland. It also covers areas around islands like the Desventuradas Islands, Easter Island, and the Juan Fernández Islands.

Here is a look at the size of Chile's EEZ:

Region EEZ Area (km2) Land area Total
Mainland 1,975,760 755 757 2,731,517
Desventuradas 449 836 5 449 841
