History of CASIL
Conic Investment: The Early Years
CASIL was first known as Conic Investment Co., Ltd. It started in British Hong Kong on July 25, 1975. Conic Investment was the main company for a group of businesses called Conic Group. This group included companies that made electronics and plastic items. Some of these were Cony Electronic Products and Chee Yuen Industrial Company. Conic also had its own brand called Contec.
The Conic Group even had a film company called Conic Film Productions. They also had a music department that released albums for famous singers like Sam Hui. There was also a TV studio called Conic TV Studio, which later became Centro TV.
In 1980, Conic Investment was one of the biggest electronics makers in Hong Kong. They built a factory in Tai Po Industrial Estate to make CRT televisions. Conic Investment also started investing in mainland China early on. They opened a factory in Fuzhou to repair their products.
The company became public on the Hong Kong stock exchange on August 25, 1981. This meant people could buy shares of the company.
In 1983, Conic Investment bought a building in Hong Kong to use as its main office. They also bought Conic Semiconductor, which made liquid-crystal display panels.
Changes and New Ownership
In 1984, a Chinese government-owned company called China Resources became the main owner of Conic Investment. This happened when China Resources bought many shares from the company's founder, Alex Au. After this, new directors from China Resources took over.
Under its new owners, Conic Investment started to focus more on business in mainland China.
Becoming China Aerospace International Holdings
In 1993, another Chinese government-owned company, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), bought Conic Investment. This was a way for CASC to become a public company in Hong Kong. Conic Investment then changed its name to China Aerospace International Holdings Limited.
Even though the company changed hands, some of its original businesses stayed. Over time, many of the group's factories moved to mainland China.
In 2005, the company sold its old head office building in Hung Hom for HK$330 million.
CASIL also owned a part of APT Satellite International, which operates Apstar satellites. In 2011, CASIL sold its share of this company to its parent company, CASC.
CASIL was also involved in a project to develop an area near the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in China. However, they left this project in 2016.
