Chionochloa is a type of tussock grass that mostly grows in New Zealand. You can also find one kind in New Guinea and another on Lord Howe Island in Australia. Many people call these grasses snowgrass because some grow in cold, snowy places.
These grasses grow in clumps, like a bunch of hair. Some can get quite tall, up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) high! One type, called Red Tussock, covers large areas on the volcanic mountains of New Zealand's North Island. You can also find it in the northern part of the South Island. Other types of Snow Tussock grow high up in the mountains, above where trees can grow.
