History of Chipman

Chipman officially became a village on October 21, 1913. The village was named after Clarence Campbell Chipman. He was an important official who worked for the railroad.

How the Area Was Governed

In the early days, the area around Chipman was managed by a group called L.I.D. 27N4. Their first meeting was on July 14, 1906. The people on this council were paid $2 per day. The secretary treasurer earned $100.

Later, on January 25, 1913, this area became the M.D. of Pines No. 516. This was a different type of local government.

In March 1944, the M.D. of Pines No. 516 joined with two other municipal districts. These were Wostok and Leslie. Together, they formed the M.D. of Lamont No. 516. This was later renamed M.D. of Lamont No. 82 on April 1, 1945.

On January 1, 1968, the County of Lamont No. 30 was created. This happened when the Lamont School Division No. 18 and the M.D. of Lamont No. 82 combined. This new county was eventually renamed Lamont County on January 1, 2000.
