After the year 1869, the northern Japanese island became known as Hokkaido. At this time, the government decided to divide Hokkaido into smaller parts. These new areas were called provinces. Chishima Province was one of these new areas, created in 1869.
During the Meiji period (a time of big changes in Japan), the old provinces were changed into new areas called prefectures. Maps of Japan, including Chishima Province, were updated in the 1870s to show these changes.
In 1882, Chishima Province and the other ten provinces of Hokkaido were reorganized. They were combined to form three new prefectures: Hakodate Prefecture, Sapporo Prefecture, and Nemuro Prefecture. This marked the end of Chishima Province as a separate area.
