Where Did It Begin?

The order was founded by Abu Ishaq Shami. His name means "the Syrian," because he came from Syria. He taught Sufism in the town of Chisht. This town is about 95 miles east of Herat, in what is now western Afghanistan.

How It Spread Across Asia

The Chishti Order is mostly followed in Afghanistan and South Asia. It was the first of four main Sufi groups to arrive in this region. The other main groups are the Qadiriyya, Suhrawardiyya, and Naqshbandi orders.

Important Leaders and Places

Moin-ud-din Chishti was a very important saint. He first brought the Chishti Order to Lahore and Ajmer in the early to mid-1100s AD. From these cities, the order spread throughout medieval India. Since then, it has become the most well-known Sufi group in South Asia.

The Chishti Order Today

Today, there are many branches of the Chishti Order. You can find chapters and branches in places like Europe, North America, and Australia. These were introduced by people who moved there from present-day India and Pakistan.
