Chocolat Kohler was a famous chocolate company from Switzerland. It was started in 1830 by the Kohler brothers. Today, it is a well-known brand owned by Nestlé.

Kohler is especially famous for creating hazelnut chocolate. This might have been the very first chocolate bar to combine different ingredients!

The Sweet Story of Chocolat Kohler

The Kohler chocolate factory was one of the first chocolate makers in Switzerland. It started soon after the Cailler chocolate company. The first factory opened in 1830. It was founded by Charles-Amédée Kohler and his brother Frédéric Kohler. Their father, Amédée Kohler, had been a trader in goods from other countries since 1793.

In 1849, Charles-Amédée Kohler bought a sawmill. He moved his chocolate production there. This new factory used the power of the Flon river to grind cocoa beans. A few years later, a steam engine replaced the river power. This helped the factory grow a lot!

In 1865, Charles-Amédée sold the business to his two sons, Charles-Amédée II and Adolphe. Later, their sons, Amédée-Louis and Jean-Jacques, took over. From 1894 to 1896, they built a new factory in Échandens.

In 1904, Chocolat Kohler joined with Chocolat Peter. This new company was called Peter Kohler. Then, in 1911, they also joined with Alexandre Cailler to form Peter Cailler Kohler. All these mergers led to the company being bought by Nestlé in 1929.

Delicious Chocolat Kohler Products

One of the most special things Chocolat Kohler made was hazelnut chocolate. Charles-Amédée Kohler created this in 1830. Imagine, a chocolate bar with crunchy hazelnuts inside!

His son, Charles-Amédée II, also invented the Branche. This is a chocolate bar filled with praline and hazelnuts. He wrote down the recipe in his book in 1896. The Branche has been made by Cailler since 1904. It has become one of the most popular candy bars in Switzerland!

Chocolat Kohler also used fun advertisements. One famous poster showed a wolf trying to get chocolates from Little Red Riding Hood's basket. The famous French artist Charles Trenet also helped advertise Chocolat Kohler.
