Daniel Peter (born March 9, 1836 – died November 4, 1919) was a Swiss chocolate maker and businessman. He started the company Peter's Chocolate. He lived near Henri Nestlé in Vevey, Switzerland. Daniel Peter was one of the first people to make milk chocolate. He is known for inventing it around 1875 or 1876. He did this by adding powdered milk to chocolate.

Daniel Peter's Life Story

Daniel Peter was born on March 9, 1836, in Moudon, Switzerland. His family came from Alsace. His father, Jean Samuel Peter, was a butcher. Daniel began learning about business in Vevey. In 1856, he started a company called Frères Peter that made candles.

Soon, people started using cheaper kerosene lamps. This meant fewer people bought candles. So, Daniel changed his business. He started making chocolate instead. In 1863, he married Fanny-Louise Cailler. Her father, François-Louis Cailler, was also a famous chocolate maker.

Inventing Milk Chocolate

Daniel Peter wanted to make chocolate with milk. He started trying in 1857. But he faced a big problem: the water in the milk caused mold to grow in the chocolate. It was very difficult to remove the water.

He worked on this for many years. Finally, in 1875, he got help from Henri Nestlé. Nestlé made baby food and had a special way to remove water from milk. After seven years of trying, Daniel Peter was able to sell his milk chocolate.

It took even more time to make the recipe perfect. In 1887, he launched his famous brand called Gala Peter. Daniel Peter named his product 'Gala' after the Greek word for 'milk'. Because of these new ideas, Switzerland soon became a leader in the chocolate market.

Other Chocolate Products

Daniel Peter also created another brand called Delta Peter. This product was a mix of milk and cocoa powder. You could add it to water to make a chocolate drink. Peter used a special triangle-shaped package for it. Each small triangle of pressed powder was enough for one cup.

Business Partnerships

In 1879, Daniel Peter and Henri Nestlé became business partners. They formed the Nestlé Company. This company grew to be one of the largest food companies in Europe. Later, in 1904, Daniel Peter's company joined with the Kohler company. Eventually, in 1929, Nestlé bought all the Peter, Cailler, and Kohler brands.

Daniel Peter passed away on November 4, 1919, in Vevey, Switzerland.
