Early Life of Henri Nestlé
Heinrich Nestle was born on August 10, 1814. His hometown was Frankfurt am Main in Germany. He was one of 14 children in his family. His father, Johann Ulrich Matthias Nestle, was a glazier. A glazier is someone who installs glass in windows and doors.
The Nestle family came from a region in Germany called Swabia. The name "Nestlé" actually means "small bird's nest" in the local dialect. This is why the family's old coat of arms shows three young birds in a nest.
The Nestle family had a long history. For over five generations, many men in the family were glaziers. Some Nestles also became mayors in their towns.
Henri Nestlé's Career Journey
Before he turned 20, Henri Nestlé finished an apprenticeship. He learned about chemistry and medicines at a pharmacy in Frankfurt. Sometime between 1834 and 1839, he moved to Switzerland. He settled in a French-speaking town called Vevey. To fit in better, he changed his name from Heinrich to Henri.
In Switzerland, Henri Nestlé started several businesses. He produced oils from plants, like rapeseed. These oils were used to light lamps. He also made drinks like liqueurs, rum, and vinegar. For a while, he even made fizzy mineral water and lemonade. Later, he focused on gas lighting and products for farms called fertilizers.
Creating Infant Formula
Henri Nestlé became very interested in helping babies. He knew that many babies did not survive their first year. He also knew that fresh milk was not always easy to find. Some mothers also looked for other ways to feed their babies.
Nestlé wanted to create a healthy baby food. He mixed cow's milk with grain and sugar. He worked with a scientist named Jean Balthasar Schnetzler. They made sure the food was easy for babies to digest. They called his new product "kindermehl," which means "children flour."
Nestlé's baby food was easy to prepare. You just needed to boil it before feeding. It quickly became a great option for babies who could not drink breast milk. Soon, his product, renamed Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé (Henri Nestlé's Milk Flour), was sold all over Europe. By the 1870s, it was even sold in the United States.
Founding the Nestlé Company
Henri Nestlé's work also helped another inventor. A chocolate maker named Daniel Peter was trying to make milk chocolate. Nestlé's process of making milk into a powder helped Peter finally succeed in 1875.
Henri Nestlé and Daniel Peter then became partners. In 1879, they formed the Nestlé Company. This company grew to become one of the biggest food businesses in Europe.
Personal Life
Henri Nestlé married Anna Clémentine Thérèse Ehemant in 1860. In 1875, he sold his company to his business partners. He and his wife then lived in Montreux and Glion in Switzerland.
Henri Nestlé was a kind person. He helped people in his community with small loans. He also gave money to improve local things like roads. He lived in a house in Glion that is now known as Villa Nestlé.
Henri Nestlé passed away on July 7, 1890. He was buried in the Territet Cemetery in Montreux.
