Chris Carrawell (born November 25, 1977) is a retired American professional basketball player. He is best known for his amazing college career at Duke University, where he was named an All-American. Today, he works as an assistant men's basketball coach under Jon Scheyer.

High School Basketball Star

Chris Carrawell grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He went to Cardinal Ritter College Prep. His teammates included future NBA players Loren Woods and Jahidi White.

During his four years on the varsity team, Chris helped his team achieve an impressive 80–13 record. They even had an undefeated streak at home for three years! In his second year, he averaged 19.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game.

As a junior, Chris averaged 20.6 points and 10 rebounds. His team won the state's Class AA championship. The next year, Cardinal Ritter won the state title again. Chris led the team with 17.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. He was named Conference Player of the Year twice. He also set school records for points (2,087), rebounds (1,076), and assists (555).

College Career at Duke

Chris Carrawell was a top recruit for Duke University and their famous coach, Mike Krzyzewski. He played for the Duke Blue Devils from 1996 to 2000.

Freshman Season (1996–97)

In his first year, Chris played in 31 games and started 12 of them. He shot very well, making 57.6% of his shots. He averaged 5.5 points per game. He was great at getting offensive rebounds and led the team in dunks. One highlight was when he helped Duke beat Wake Forest by blocking a key shot.

Sophomore Season (1997–98)

As a sophomore, Chris mostly came off the bench but started ten games. Duke had a great season with a 32–4 record, reaching the Elite Eight. Chris scored in double figures 22 times and averaged 10.1 points per game. He also averaged 3.1 rebounds.

Junior Season (1998–99)

In his junior year, Chris started every game. He averaged 9.9 points per game and helped Duke reach the Final Four. He was third in rebounds and second in assists on a team with many future NBA players. Duke was undefeated in their conference, the ACC, but lost in the national championship game. Chris was named Third-Team All-ACC for his efforts.

Senior Season (1999–00)

Chris had an amazing senior year, starting every game. He averaged 16.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. He was second on his team in scoring, rebounding, and assists. Duke finished with a 29–5 record and won the ACC Tournament championship. They also made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. Chris was named the 2000 ACC Player of the Year and earned First-Team All-American honors.

Duke University Records

Chris Carrawell was a versatile player who could guard many positions. He was named All-ACC twice during his time at Duke. He is tied for 27th on Duke's all-time scoring list with 1,455 career points. He also ranks 14th in school history for blocks per game.

Chris helped the Blue Devils win 66 conference games, which is the second most by a Duke player. He and teammate Nate James are the only two players in ACC history to play on teams that won four straight ACC regular-season championships. Chris was also the only player to play in every game of Duke's record-setting 30 straight league wins. During his college career, Duke had an incredible record of 133–24 overall and 58–6 in ACC games. In 136 college games, he averaged 10.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.

Professional Basketball Career

After graduating from Duke, Chris Carrawell was chosen by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round of the 2000 NBA draft. He was the 41st pick overall.

Chris played basketball overseas in countries like Italy, Lithuania, Germany, and Australia. He also played in the Philippines and Venezuela. He returned to the United States to play in the D League (a league connected to the NBA) for the Asheville Altitude. In 56 games, he averaged 7.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists.

While playing in the American Basketball Association (ABA), Chris had a fantastic year in 2006. He won the ABA MVP Award, an ABA Championship, and was named the ABA Championship MVP. He retired from playing basketball in 2007 after playing in the Netherlands.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Chris Carrawell worked in different roles at Duke University for four years. He was an Outreach Coordinator, a graduate assistant, and an assistant video coordinator.

In 2011, he became an assistant coach for the Springfield Armor, a team in the NBA D League. In 2014, Chris joined the coaching staff at Marquette University. He worked there as an assistant coach for four years.

On March 30, 2018, Chris returned to his old college, Duke, as an assistant coach. He took over from Jeff Capel, who became a head coach at another university.

Personal Life

Chris Carrawell lives in Mebane, North Carolina, with his wife, Keisha Royster-Carrawell. They have two sons named Caleb and Christian. Chris earned a degree in sociology from Duke University.
