Christian Thomasius was an important German thinker, lawyer, and professor. He lived from 1655 to 1728. He helped change how people thought about law, education, and freedom. He is known for promoting new ideas during the Enlightenment in Germany.

Who Was Christian Thomasius?

His Early Life and Education

Christian Thomasius was born in Leipzig, Germany, on January 1, 1655. His father, Jakob Thomasius, was a professor at Leipzig University. Christian learned a lot from his father. He was especially influenced by the ideas of famous thinkers like Hugo Grotius and Samuel Pufendorf.

He studied law at the University of Frankfurt (Oder). He earned his doctorate degree in law in 1679. After that, he started working as a lawyer in Leipzig. He also began teaching law at Leipzig University in 1681. By 1684, he became a full professor.

Thomasius's Bold New Ideas

Thomasius quickly became known for his new and sometimes controversial ideas. He challenged old ways of thinking in religion and law.

In 1687, he did something very unusual. He started giving his university lectures in German instead of Latin. At that time, almost all university classes were taught in Latin. This was a big step towards making education more accessible. He believed that using German would help more people understand and learn. Many historians see this as the start of the Enlightenment in Germany.

He also started a monthly magazine in 1688. In this magazine, he made fun of overly serious scholars. He supported the Pietists, a religious group who wanted a more personal faith. He also argued that people from different Christian groups, like Lutherans and Calvinists, should be allowed to marry.

Moving to Halle and Founding a University

Because of his new ideas, Thomasius faced problems. In 1690, he was told he could not teach or write. An order was even given for his arrest. He had to escape to Berlin.

Luckily, Frederick III, the ruler of Prussia, offered him a safe place in Halle. Thomasius was given a good salary and permission to teach there.

In 1694, he helped create the University of Halle. This was a very important new university. Thomasius became a leading law professor there. Later, he even became the university's rector (head). He was one of the most respected teachers and writers of his time. In 1709, he joined the king's special council.

His Impact on Law and Society

Thomasius was not just a professor. He helped bring about major changes in law, literature, and how people lived. He wanted to use common sense and reason to solve problems. He believed that law and politics should be separate from religious control.

He strongly supported freedom of thought and speech. He also argued against punishing atheists. Most famously, he was a strong opponent of the trials and executions of people accused of being witches. At a time when many believed in witchcraft, he bravely spoke out against these unfair trials.

Thomasius also worked to make German law more independent. He questioned some old Roman law rules. He wanted to base laws on natural reason and German traditions. This helped create a new way of studying private law.

He died in Halle in 1728, leaving behind a legacy of important reforms and new ways of thinking.

Thomasius's Important Writings

Thomasius wrote many books and articles. Some of his most popular works were in German, like his magazine. He also wrote important books in Latin about law and reason.
