Kingfish Ingram's Early Life
Growing Up in Mississippi
Christone Ingram was born in 1999 in Clarksdale, Mississippi. His parents are Princess Pride and Christopher Ingram. His mother is a cousin to the country musician Charley Pride.
Kingfish grew up in a musical family. His relatives often sang and played music in church. He went to many gospel music shows when he was young. He even tried to join in, even though he wasn't very good yet. He learned a lot by listening to music from legends like B. B. King, Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix.
Learning to Play Music
Kingfish became interested in the blues around age five. His father showed him a TV show about Muddy Waters. His dad also promised they would visit the Delta Blues Museum. There, Kingfish learned to play from teachers like Bill "Howl-N-Mad" Perry. He also went to the Pinetop Perkins Workshop every summer.
Bill Perry gave Kingfish his nickname, "Kingfish." It came from a character in an old TV show. Kingfish started playing drums when he was six. By age eleven, he played bass, and then he learned guitar. He even appeared on TV shows like Rachael Ray.
When he was fifteen, Kingfish was already getting offers to perform. He also got offers for custom-made guitars. His friends often listened to hip hop music. They thought it was funny that he liked "old, sad stuff." But Kingfish explained that blues is history. He told them that rap music actually came from the blues.
By 2015, Kingfish caught the eye of Tony Coleman. Tony was B. B. King's drummer. Tony said Kingfish played the blues exactly how it should be played.
