Christoph Kramer (born 19 February 1991) is a German professional footballer. He plays as a defensive midfielder, which means he helps protect his team's goal. From 2013 to 2024, he played for the Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Kramer started his senior career at Bayer Leverkusen in 2011. He then spent time on loan at other clubs. He played two seasons with VfL Bochum and two seasons with Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Club Career Highlights

Christoph Kramer joined his local club, BV Graefrath, in 1995. When he was eight, he moved to Bayer Leverkusen. At 15, he left Leverkusen's youth team because he was considered too short.

After two years with Fortuna Düsseldorf's youth team, Kramer returned to Leverkusen in 2008. He signed his first professional contract in 2010. He then played for Bayer Leverkusen II for a season. In 2011, he joined the main team but was immediately loaned out.

Playing for VfL Bochum (on loan)

Kramer was loaned to 2. Bundesliga team VfL Bochum for two seasons. He made his professional debut on 18 July 2011. This was in a match where Bochum lost 2-0 to Fortuna Düsseldorf.

His first goal for Bochum came on 25 February 2012. He scored a goal in a big 6-2 loss to Greuther Fürth. During his time at Bochum, Kramer played in 61 league games. He scored four goals for the club.

Playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach (on loan)

In July 2013, Kramer joined Borussia Mönchengladbach on a two-year loan. He made his Bundesliga debut on 9 August 2013. This was in a 3-1 loss to champions Bayern Munich.

He scored his first goal for Gladbach in the next game. It was the team's second goal in a 3-0 win against Hannover 96. On 3 May 2014, Kramer scored again against Mainz 05. This goal helped Gladbach qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

After the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Kramer returned to Gladbach. On 24 August 2014, he scored a last-minute goal. This helped his team draw 1-1 with VfB Stuttgart. In November, he accidentally scored an own goal against Borussia Dortmund. This gave Dortmund a 1-0 win.

In December 2014, it was announced that Kramer would return to Leverkusen in 2015. His contract with Leverkusen was also extended until 2019.

Returning to Borussia Mönchengladbach

On 8 June 2016, Kramer made a permanent move back to Borussia Mönchengladbach. He signed a five-year contract with the club.

2014 FIFA World Cup Success

Kramer played his first World Cup game in the Round of 16 against Algeria. He came on as a substitute late in the game.

He was chosen to start the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final because another player, Sami Khedira, got injured just before the game. However, Kramer had to leave the game in the first half. He took a hit to the head during a collision with an Argentine player. André Schürrle replaced him.

It was later found that Kramer might have had a concussion. The referee said that Kramer asked him if the match was the final. This happened 14 minutes after the collision. Kramer's teammates later joked about this incident in a video.

Towards the end of his international career, Kramer was part of a special project. In 2016, the German Football Association and The LEGO Group released a special collectible minifigure series. Kramer was featured as one of the minifigures in this collection.
