The Battle of Waynesboro, Virginia, was a key moment in Bruton's service. It took place on March 2, 1865. This battle was the final major fight for Confederate Lieutenant General Jubal Early. His forces were completely defeated by the Union Army. Bruton's gallantry, or great bravery, during this battle was recognized. It was for his actions here that he received the Medal of Honor.

Christopher C. Bruton passed away in 1867, just two years after the war ended. He is remembered as a courageous officer who earned the nation's highest award for his bravery.
