Christopher James Paolini (born November 17, 1983) is a famous American and Italian author. He is most known for his amazing fantasy series, The Inheritance Cycle. This series includes the books Eragon (published in 2002), Eldest (2005), Brisingr (2008), and Inheritance (2011). He also wrote a collection of short stories called The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm (2018). More recently, he released Murtagh (2023), which is the first book in a new series set in the same world.
Christopher Paolini also writes science fiction. His first science fiction novel, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, came out on September 15, 2020. He lives in Paradise Valley, Montana, which is where he wrote his very first book.

Early Life and Education
Christopher Paolini was born in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in Paradise Valley, Montana. His family includes his parents, Kenneth Paolini and Talita Hodgkinson, and his younger sister, Angela Paolini. His family has roots in Italy, as his grandfather was born in Rome. Christopher also has Italian citizenship.
He was taught at home for all of his schooling. He finished high school when he was just 15 years old. He did this by taking special online courses from the American School of Correspondence.
Becoming a Published Author
Christopher Paolini started writing his first novel, Eragon, when he was only 15 years old. This book became the first part of his popular The Inheritance Cycle series. The story takes place in a magical land called Alagaësia.
In 2002, Eragon was first published by his parents' company, Paolini International LLC. To help promote his book, Christopher traveled to more than 135 schools and libraries. He talked about reading and writing, often dressed in a cool medieval costume. He even drew the cover art for the first edition of Eragon, which showed the eye of the dragon Saphira. He also drew the maps inside his books.
How Eragon Became Famous
In 2002, the stepson of author Carl Hiaasen found Eragon in a bookstore and really liked it. He told Carl Hiaasen about the book. This led to Hiaasen showing it to his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf. Knopf then decided to publish Eragon and the rest of The Inheritance Cycle series.
The second edition of Eragon was published by Knopf in August 2003. When he was 19, Christopher Paolini became a New York Times-bestselling author. This means his book was one of the most popular books in the country!
The Inheritance Cycle Series
Eldest, the second book in the series, was released on August 23, 2005. The third book, Brisingr, came out on September 20, 2008. The series was first planned to be three books. However, Christopher decided to write a fourth book, Inheritance, which was released on November 8, 2011. This book was published in many countries and translated into 53 languages. The entire Inheritance Cycle series has sold over 41 million copies worldwide.
On December 31, 2018, a new book called The Fork, the Witch, and the Worm was published. This book is the first in a new series called Tales of Alagaësia.
Other Books and Projects
Christopher Paolini's science fiction novel, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, was released on September 15, 2020. This book was published by Tor Books.
In October 2021, Christopher released an interactive story called Unity. This story is part of his science fiction world, the Fractalverse, and can be found on his website.
On October 3, 2022, Paolini announced another book in the Fractalverse called Fractal Noise. This book is a prequel to To Sleep in a Sea of Stars and was published on May 16, 2023.
The latest book in his Alagaësia world, Murtagh, was released on November 7, 2023.
Film and TV Adaptations
In December 2006, a movie based on Eragon was released by Fox 2000. The movie was shown in theaters around the world.
In July 2022, it was announced that Christopher Paolini is helping to write a live-action TV series based on Eragon for Disney+. This is exciting news for fans of the books!

What Inspires Christopher Paolini
Many things have inspired Christopher Paolini's writing. He enjoys the works of famous authors like J. R. R. Tolkien and E. R. Eddison. He also found inspiration in the old epic poem Beowulf.
Christopher has said that Eragon was especially inspired by a book called Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher by Bruce Coville. Other authors who influenced him include David Eddings, Andre Norton, Brian Jacques, and Anne McCaffrey. He also likes books by C.S. Lewis and Neil Gaiman.
Nature plays a big part in his writing. Christopher has mentioned that Paradise Valley, Montana, where he lives, is a major source of his ideas.
He is also a big fan of the TV show Doctor Who. He has included small references to the show in his books, like mentioning "rooms that are bigger on the inside than the outside."
