Chrome is a small, quiet community in Glenn County, California. It's not a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's an "unincorporated community," meaning it's part of the larger county area. Chrome is located about 9 miles (14 km) north of Elk Creek. It sits at an elevation of 935 feet (285 meters) above sea level. You can find this community along Country Road 306. Its special mail code, or zip code, is 95963.

Why is it Called Chrome?

The name "Chrome" might make you think of shiny car parts, but this community got its name from something else entirely. Chrome was named after the metal chromium. Long ago, people mined chromium in the area around Chrome. This metal was very important for different industries.

The Chromium Mines

For many years, mining for chromium was a big deal in Chrome. There was even a special mill in the area. This mill helped process the chromium that was dug out of the ground. However, by the 1940s, most of the main chromium mines were empty. Because of this, the local chromium mill eventually closed down.

The Old Schoolhouse

Like many small communities, Chrome once had its own school. This school served the children living in the area for many years. It was a central part of the community's life.

Moving History

The original Chrome schoolhouse was built way back in 1891. It stood in Chrome for a long time, teaching generations of students. However, the school closed its doors in the 1950s. Years later, in 1978, the historic schoolhouse was moved. It found a new home at the Glenn County Fairgrounds in Willows. This way, the old building could be preserved and remembered.
