Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Jamar grew up surrounded by music. His father, Selvin "Chronicle" McNaughton, encouraged his talent from a very young age. Jamar wrote his first song, "Rice Grain," when he was only five years old.
He once said in an interview that music was always part of his family life. He sang at school and in church. He started taking music seriously in high school, where he began producing "riddims." A riddim is an instrumental track that different artists can sing over.
He attended St Catherine High School in Spanish Town, Jamaica. By age 11, he was already in the recording studio. He also sang backup vocals for other artists like Lutan Fyah. At 14, he was creating his own riddims for record labels. A sad event in 2009, the death of his brother, led him to start writing songs with producer Romaine 'Teflon' Arnett.
