Chryste Gaines's Education
Chryste Gaines finished high school in 1988 at South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, Texas. In her last year of high school, she was named the best high school girl's track and field athlete in the entire country by Gatorade.
She earned a bachelor's degree from Stanford University in 1992. Later, in 2007, she received her MBA from Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University.
Track and Field Career
While attending Stanford University, Chryste Gaines was a top athlete. In 1992, she won the NCAA indoor championship in the 55-meter sprint. The same year, she also won the NCAA outdoor championship in the 100-meter race. She was the first person to win the conference 100-meter championship three times.
Olympic Achievements
Gaines represented the United States at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. She won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 meters relay race. Her teammates were Gail Devers, Inger Miller, and Gwen Torrence.
She competed again at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. As the only returning member of the 4 × 100 meters team, she helped her team win a bronze medal. Her teammates this time were Marion Jones, Torri Edwards, and Nanceen Perry.
Personal Best and Retirement
Chryste Gaines's fastest time in the 100 meters was 10.86 seconds, which she achieved in 2003. She continued to compete successfully in track and field until 2008.
Rules and Fair Play
In 2003, Chryste Gaines faced issues regarding sports rules. Her results were changed because a banned substance was found. Later that year, she was part of an investigation into rule-breaking in sports. In 2004, she received a two-year ban from competing.
Because one of her teammates used a banned substance, the IOC tried to take back the bronze medal from the 2000 Olympics 4 × 100 relay team. However, Gaines and her five teammates successfully appealed this decision, keeping their medals.
Honors and Awards
- In 1987–88, Gaines was named the Gatorade National Track & Field Athlete of the Year. This award goes to one outstanding high school girl in track and field each year.
- In 2009, she was recognized as one of 10 "Women Out Front" by Georgia Tech. This leadership award was given while she was an academic advisor there.
- In 2018, she was honored as one of the first 10 people inducted into the Dallas Independent School District's Athletic Hall of Fame.
Coaching Career
Chryste Gaines has coached track and field at both high school and college levels. As of 2018, she was the track and field and cross country coach at Heritage High School in Frisco, Texas.
