The Chthonerpeton onorei is a special type of amphibian. Amphibians are animals that can live both on land and in water, like frogs and salamanders. This particular amphibian belongs to a family called Typhlonectidae.
This animal is found only in Ecuador. When an animal or plant is found in just one place, it is called endemic. So, the Chthonerpeton onorei is endemic to Ecuador.
Where Does It Live?
The Chthonerpeton onorei likes to live in many different places. Its natural habitats include moist montane forests. These are forests found in mountains where it rains a lot.
It also lives near rivers and in swamps. You can find it in freshwater marshes, which are wet, grassy areas. Sometimes, these marshes dry up and then get wet again; these are called intermittent freshwater marshes.
This amphibian can even be found in places changed by humans. This includes pastureland, which is land used for grazing animals. It also lives in irrigated land, where water is supplied for farming. You might see it in agricultural areas that get flooded sometimes. It also lives in canals and ditches.
A Big Discovery
For a long time, scientists thought this species only lived in southern Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina. But then, something exciting happened!
In 1984 and 1985, a scientist named Dr. G. Onore found two of these amphibians in Ecuador. This discovery was very important. It showed that the Chthonerpeton onorei lived much farther north than anyone thought.
This new finding extended the known area where the species lives by a huge distance. It added about 4,250 kilometers (about 2,640 miles) northwest from southern Brazil. This was a big surprise for scientists studying amphibians!
