Chuchi Cos: A Football Journey
Chuchi Cos started his football journey in his home region of Cantabria, Spain. He played for many clubs throughout his career. After retiring as a player, he moved into coaching, leading teams in different Spanish leagues.
Playing Career: From Forward to Goal Scorer
Chuchi Cos began playing football in 1988 with Gimnástica de Torrelavega. This team was in the Tercera División, which is a lower-tier league in Spain. He helped his team win their group in the 1989–90 season.
After that, he joined Laredo in the same league. In 1992, he moved up to a higher league, Segunda División B, to play for Barakaldo. He had a great season there, scoring sixteen goals in 34 matches.
Cos then played for several other teams in the third tier. He spent two seasons with Xerez, one with Numancia, and two with Pontevedra. In 1998, he joined Noja, a team that had just been promoted.
Noja was relegated back to the Tercera División after just one season. Cos stayed with the club until 2000. He helped them win their Tercera División group again in the 1999–2000 season. He then returned to Segunda División B with Tropezón. After that season, in 2001, Chuchi Cos retired from playing football at age 32.
Coaching Career: Leading Teams to Success
After his playing career, Chuchi Cos became a football coach. His first coaching job was with Palamós in 2002. They had just been promoted to the Segunda División B.
Moving to La Liga
In 2003, the owner of Palamós, Dmitry Piterman, bought a share in Racing Santander, a team in La Liga. La Liga is Spain's top football league. Piterman quickly brought Chuchi Cos in to coach Racing Santander. Cos helped the team avoid being relegated (moving down to a lower league) that season.
However, Cos was replaced before the next season started. Piterman then bought a big share in Deportivo Alavés, a team in the Segunda División (the second-highest league). Once again, he appointed Chuchi Cos as the manager.
Promoting Alavés and New Roles
Chuchi Cos led Alavés to promotion in his first season, moving them up to La Liga! He continued as manager for the first part of the 2005–06 La Liga season. In January, Piterman changed Cos's role to director of football. This meant Cos would help manage the club's overall football strategy, not just coach the team.
Alavés had a tough time that season and was relegated. The next season, 2006–07, Alavés had many changes in managers. Chuchi Cos was reappointed as manager in September 2006. However, he was also fired in January 2007. Alavés ended up having six different managers that season!
