Chui A-poo was one of the most powerful pirates of his time in that region. Another famous pirate leader was Shap Ng-tsai.
Chui A-poo's Fleet
Chui A-poo led a very large fleet of ships. These ships were called junks. Junks are traditional Chinese sailing vessels. His fleet was based in a place called Bias Bay. This bay is located east of Hong Kong.
The Battle of Bias Bay
In September 1849, Chui A-poo's fleet faced a big battle. They were attacked by warships from Britain and China. This event is known as the Battle of Bias Bay. During this battle, more than 400 pirates were killed. Chui A-poo himself was badly hurt.
Even though he was injured, Chui A-poo managed to get away at first. However, some of his own crew members turned him over to the British authorities. He was wanted by the authorities. There was a reward of £500 for his capture. Chui A-poo died in 1851.
