Before 2010, Chula Vista was part of a larger area called Chula Vista-Orason. Now, it is its own separate CDP. It is also part of the larger Brownsville–Harlingen metropolitan area.

Chula Vista is in the middle of Cameron County. It is about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Los Fresnos. It is also about 15 miles (24 km) north of Brownsville. The community of Orason is right next to Chula Vista on its western side.
