Chungmok of Goryeo (born Wang Heun) was the 29th king of the Goryeo dynasty in Korea. He was born on May 15, 1337, and ruled from 1344 to 1348. He passed away on December 25, 1348.
Who Was King Chungmok?
King Chungmok's birth name was Wang Heun. He was the oldest son of King Chunghye of Goryeo. His mother was Princess Deongnyeong.
King Chungmok was also known by his Mongolian name, Batma Dorji. This name shows the strong connection between Goryeo and the Yuan Empire at that time.
Becoming King
In 1343, King Chungmok's father, King Chunghye, was removed from his position. After this, young Chungmok had a special meeting with the Yuan Emperor Toghon Temür.
The Emperor asked Chungmok a very important question. He wanted to know if Chungmok would prefer to follow the ways of his mother or his father. Chungmok wisely answered that he would follow his mother's ways.
The Emperor was very impressed by this answer. He said that Chungmok was a child who understood the difference between right and wrong. Because of his wise answer, the Emperor decided to make him the new king of Goryeo.
King Chungmok ruled for a short time, from 1344 until his death in 1348. His younger brother, Chungjeong of Goryeo, became the next king.
