The Church of All Saints in Nunney, Somerset, England, is a very old and important building. It is known as a Grade I listed building, which means it is protected because of its special history and architecture. This church has been standing since the 12th century, which is over 800 years ago!

A Glimpse into History

The Church of All Saints was likely built on the spot where an even older church once stood. You can still see clues from these ancient times inside. There is a Saxon cross and a Norman font. Saxon and Norman refer to very early periods in English history, long before the 12th century. A baptismal font is a special basin used for baptisms, which are ceremonies to welcome people into the Christian faith.

The Church's Roof Story

For many years, the main part of the church, called the nave, had a special 15th-century wooden roof. This type of roof was known as a wagon or Barrel vault because of its curved shape. Sadly, the wood in this old roof started to rot. Because of this, the roof had to be taken down in 1957.

After the old roof was removed, a temporary roof was put in place. This temporary roof was hidden by a ceiling that hung below it. Today, plans are being made to replace the roof with a new, permanent one. People are also working hard to raise money to help pay for this important project.

Important People Buried Here

Many important people from Nunney's past are buried at All Saints' Church. This includes Sir John Delamare and other lords who lived in the nearby Nunney Castle. Their burials here show how important the church has been to the local community for centuries.
