The Church of St Andrew is an old church located in Sevenhampton, a village in the Cotswold District of Gloucestershire, England. It was built a very long time ago, in the 1100s! This church is so special that it's a Grade I listed building, which means it's considered a very important historical building.

A Look Back: The Church's Story

The main parts of the church were built in the 12th and 13th centuries. That's between the years 1100 and 1299! The tall tower was added later, in the 15th century (around the 1400s).

In 1136, the church was given to Llanthony Priory. This gift was made by Robert de Bethune, who was the Bishop of Hereford at the time. Around the year 1500, workers added a special "lantern tower" above the central part of the church, called the Crossing.

Later, in 1892, the church had a big makeover. This was called a Victorian restoration, and it was done by an architect named Frederick S. Waller.

Today, the Church of St Andrew is part of the Church of England. It belongs to a group of churches called the Coln River Group, which is part of the Diocese of Gloucester.

What the Church Looks Like

The Church of St Andrew is shaped like a cross when you look at it from above. It is made from limestone, a type of rock, and its roof is covered with stone tiles.

The church has a main area called the nave, with a small porch on the south side. It also has a chancel (the area near the altar) and two side sections called transepts, one to the north and one to the south. In the middle, there's a central tower.

The Tower and Its Bells

The tower has three levels. Inside, there's a spiral staircase with eight sides that leads up to the roof. The tower is also home to three bells. The oldest bell is very old, dating back to the 15th century!

Windows and Fonts

Nine of the church's windows have beautiful stained glass. The oldest of these colorful windows was put in back in 1869. The church also has two fonts, which are basins used for baptisms. One font is from the late 1600s, and the other is from the Victorian era.

Special Memorials

Inside the church, you can find a special tablet that lists the names of people from the village who died in World War I. There are also several other memorials dedicated to the Lawrence family, who lived at Whittington Court.
