A Historic Building
The Church of St George was completed in 1796. It was designed by an architect named Samuel Hope. The church has a special architectural style called Georgian architecture. This style was popular in Britain during the Georgian period. In 1907, some parts of the church, like the chancel and a south chapel, were added or rebuilt. This work was done by James Simpson.
Why It's Special
On April 26, 1974, the Church of St George was given a special status. It was named a Grade II* listed building. This means it is a very important historical building. It needs to be protected because of its special architecture and history. The church stopped being used for services in 1975. After that, it was turned into the crafts centre you can visit today.
The Journey of the Bells
In 1806, something very special happened at the church. A set of change ringing bells was made for it. These bells were cast by a person named John Rudhall. They were created to celebrate a big victory. This was Nelson's Victory at Trafalgar. This battle was a very important naval battle.
Bells Across the World
The bells stayed in the church for a long time. But in 1976, the church closed. The bells were taken out. They were almost sent to a scrapyard. Luckily, they were saved by the Anglican Diocese of Wangaratta. This group is from Australia. In 1977, the bells were shipped all the way to Victoria, Australia. They had to wait a bit longer to be rung. A new tower had to be built to hold them. Finally, in 1987, the bells were rung for the first time in their new home. Today, these bells are very special. They are the oldest "complete" set of ringing bells in Australia.
