Discover the Church of St John the Baptist
This church is a key part of the village of Carhampton. It has a long history, with parts of it dating back many centuries. It's a great example of old English architecture and craftsmanship.
A Look Back in Time
Before the current church, there was an even older church in Carhampton. This first church was built a bit to the east of where the present one stands. It was named after St Carantoc, who was a Welsh monk from the 500s.
The church you see today was mostly built in the 1400s. This was during a time when a style called the "Perpendicular period" was popular for churches. However, the church has changed quite a lot over the years. A big part of it was rebuilt between 1862 and 1863. The tower also got a major rebuild from 1868 to 1870. Before these changes, the tower was much lower and had a tiled roof.
Inside the Church
Even though the church was rebuilt, some very old parts remain. You can still see the wooden pulpit (where the priest speaks) and a painted wooden screen. These pieces are very old, dating back to around the year 1500. Some of the old monuments and bells from the earlier church are also still there. They help tell the story of the church's long past.
